Oral Hygiene

TeenBoy_Braces_3Our Oral Hygiene Home Care Recommendations While in Orthodontic Treatment

Having the right tools and a daily routine is key.  Remember to avoid drinking a lot of high sugar/high acidic drinks, such as soda, pop, Gatorade and sports drinks.

Brushing

Brush after every meal, at least three times a day.  Especially focus at the gumline between the gum tissue and the orthodontic bracket.  Healthy gum tissue does not bleed.

  • Use an ultrasonic toothbrush such as the Sonicare or ORAL-B.  Available at our office.
  • Use a smaller size brush head such as a child's size toothbrush

Flossing

Floss at least once per day, ideally at night.  Guide the floss between your teeth in a gentle up and down motion hugging sides of the tooth.

  • Use the Placker flossing tools - we will give you a sample to try.  They are available for purchase at Walgreens and Walmart.

ProxaBrush

A small brush that is used to clean around and in between the orthodontic brackets.  We will give you a sample to try.  You can find different varieties of these brushes available at most stores that sell toothbrushes.

Fluoride

Daily use of prescription strength fluoride toothpaste helps to re-mineralize the enamel and prevent "white spots" or decalcification around the orthodontic bracket due to poor oral hygiene.

  • Use a small pea-sized amount on your brush.   Spit out excess paste after brushing.  Do not rinse, drink or eat for 30 minutes.  Clinpro 5000 is available at our office.
  • Have our office apply fluoride varnish approximately every other visit with our Fluoride Varnish program.
